IB ITGS--Information Technology in a Global Society

Description The Diploma Programme Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) course is the study and evaluation of the effects and impact technology has on the individuals and the global community. The focus of ITGS will be on providing the opportunity for students to systematically study information technology systems and their influence and impact on social issues. Prerequisites Students should have basic keyboarding and word processing skills. Students should have a strong understanding of various hardware and software components and terminology. In addition, students should be skilled in efficient internet research techniques and email applications.

Objectives Critically examine the global impact of technology developments and innovations Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of social and ethical issues and implications as they relate to technology on a global level Deisgn and apply IT solutions to real problems in a social context Express ideas clearly and concisely Materials Needed 3 ring binder dividers composition book flash drive pink and yellow highlighters Internet Access at home Email Address

Shannon Ector, Briana Burris, Sara Garcia, Destiny Bennett, Kelsey Burleson, and Sabrina Moses were the first IB ITGS pioneers to master the course. These students successfully completed their Internal Assessment Project and mastered the end-of-course External Assessment Exams (a 3 hour endeavor consisting of 2 written exams). Every student received an IB score of 4 or higher. In all, we had 3 students scoring a 4, 2 students scoring a 5 and 1 student scoring a 6 out of 7 possible points. This is an outstanding accomplishment and these young students are on their way to achieving the IB Diploma. Congratulations! (posted 2007) The ITGS Students explore the field of robotics. Mr. Chris Edwards and Mr. Steve Arms, Directors at Lockheed Martin demonstsrated the robotics technology. The IB SL students including Alaina Curry, Trang Nguyen, Donna Frias, Christine Tran, and Rolly Kuye successfully completed their External Assessment Exams. Most of the students scored a 5 out of 7 possible points with one scoring a 4. This is a great accomplishment for the ITGS program. Job well done! Building Up your Current Events database: Have a look at technology news on TV, newspapers, the internet, or magazines. Place these articles in your notebook and write a brief commentary using the ITGS News Commentary Form that demonstrates how information technology is being used to help businesses, hospitals, governments, schools, or the entertainment industry. This will help you in your essay writing and class discussions because you will have a wide variety of real-life examples and you will build a collection of news items and vocabulary words.
